What trompe l’oeil is and what L’Inganno means |
|
“Trompe l’oeil” simply means “trick the eye” in French, and that’s why my studio is called L’Inganno (which in turn means “the trick” in Italian).
This trick consists of using techniques such as perspective and foreshortening to create illusory effects, to make things appear to be what they aren’t and where they aren’t.
Practised in Greek and Roman times – examples are to be found in Pompei – this type of illusionism was revived during the Renaissance and applied in painting, sculpture, architecture and even landscape gardening. |
